SHU Welcomes Dr Brera as an MSCA Research Fellow

LtR: Provost Katia Passerini, Dr. Matteo Brera, Professor William J. Connell

Seton Hall welcomes Matteo Brera as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Research Fellow from the European Commission. His project, done in collaboration with Università di Padova’s Dipartimento di Scienze Storiche, Geografiche e dell’Antichità (DiSSGeA) (Department of Historical and Geographic Sciences and the Ancient World), focuses on the Italian ethnic press in the Gulf South (1877-1945) and its role in shaping racial awareness. Dr. Brera will collaborate with Seton Hall's Libraries to create a digital database preserving key historical documents such as the newspapers L’Italo Americano, La Voce Coloniale (New Orleans, LA) and Il Gladiatore (Birmingham, AL). He will be at the university until October 2025, conducting groundbreaking research on Italian diasporic history under the supervision of Professor William J. Connell, LaMotta Chair in Italian American Studies.
