‘Diaspore italiane’ Symposium Organized by Genoa's MEI

Genoa’s Museo Nazionale dell’Emigrazione Italiana (National Italian Emigration Museum)

Dr. Matteo Brera will present at the upcoming ‘Diaspore italiane – Italy in Movement’ symposium organized by Genoa’s Museo Nazionale dell’Emigrazione Italiana (National Italian Emigration Museum), part of Musei di Genova.

The event is presented by the Italian Assistance Association (CoAsIt Melbourne), John D Calandra Italian American Institute, and the city of Genoa's MuMA - Istituzione Musei del Mare e delle Migrazioni (Institution of Maritime and Migrations Museums). It will host several international scholars engaging in discussions on Italian historical migration, with some 27 million emigrants between 1870 and 1970; Italian diasporic communities, with some 80 million people worldwide today; Italian colonial history, with some 500,000 settlers at its peak in 1940; Italy as a destination for migrants and refugees, from the 1980s onwards; the so-called new Italian emigration, from the turn of the century onwards. This is in line with Dr. Brera’s current research on the history of Italian diasporic communities in the American South and the issue of racial identity within the community of Italian emigrants in the Southern United States.
